Many great jazz musicians happen to be women—and not always in the more traditionally accepted role of vocalist. Non-male jazz instrumentalists experience gender inequality in the profession. In order to provide education for our students and community, VCU Jazz has presented some of the finest jazz musicians who happen to be women, including the SHEroes quintet (Jamie Baum, flute; Reut Regev, trombone; Monika Herzig, piano; Jennifer Vincent, bass; Rosa Avila, drums); the 3D Jazz Trio (Jackie Warren, piano; Amy Shook, drums; Sherrie Maricle, drums); composer Maria Schneider; vocalist René Marie; clarinetist Lori Freedman; saxophonists Claire Daly and Grace Kelly; trumpeters Tanya Darby, Ingrid Jensen, and Bria Skonberg; pianists Monika Herzig, Michelle Rosewoman, and Patrice Rushen; percussionists Mayra Casales; and artists within several United States military jazz bands. VCU Jazz successfully funded the SHEroes residency via $5700 of grants received from the VCU Foundation and VCUarts.
