The impact of extraordinary medical bills on a family is indeed a matter of humanitarian relief and social justice. VCU Jazz's October 2007 "Concert for Lindsay" brought together 39 faculty, student, and guest artists from the Department of Music, the Department of Fashion Design, and the community, raising nearly $30,000 for the expenses of VCU Fashion recent alumna Lindsay Ess (daughter of VCU Jazz Prof. Mike Ess), facing the aftermath of a medical emergency. The concert was broadcast on Richmond's Public Broadcasting Station WCVW in January 2008, prompting additional donations. VCU Jazz Director Antonio García served as executive producer, artistic director, ensemble director, trombone and vocal soloist, and on-stage host for the event that featured The American Saxophone Quartet; VCU Jazz Orchestra I; VCU Music faculty Taylor Barnett (trumpet), Skip Gailes (saxophone), Antonio García (trombone), Anne Guthmiller (voice), Bob Hallahan (piano), Bryan Hooten (trombone), Adam Larrabee (guitar), Tony Martucci (drums), Al Regni (saxophone), and Rex Richardson (trumpet); VCU alumni Rusty Farmer and Brian Sulser (bass), Kevin Simpson (saxophone), and Terri Simpson (voice); and VCU Jazz Guitar students Colin Greggs, Karl Morse, and Matt Walton.
