Cutting the Changes: Jazz Improvisation via Key Centers
by George Broussard
The morning after he and Tom Brantley had wailed through the changes at Capozzoli’s, Tony García unveiled his new approach to improvisation—“cutting the changes.” Using volunteers and a pre-recorded rhythm section, Tony explained and demonstrated his concept of working from the big picture. Simplify; use one key for an entire tune rather than the faster-moving chord symbols. Then progress to the basic key centers before moving to the complex complete progression. It was an engaging and interesting session. “Cutting the Changes” works.
