a YouTube playlist of virtual duets recorded separately by various artists with me |
Wanting to collaborate with other musicians during pandemic lockdown, I began this project, inspired partly by my eternal delight at hearing different musicians improvise on the same musical framework and partly by such wonderful recordings long ago as pianist Bill Evans' "Conversations with Myself." My thanks to my many duet partners on this project! At this writing they include trombonists Wycliffe Gordon, Russ Phillips, Al Hermann, Philip Jones, and Harry Watters; trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; and saxophonist Tom Christensen. |

I composed "By Request" at the request of harpist Carrol McLaughlin for premiere at the 1993 International Jazz and Pop Harpfest that I co-hosted at Northern Illinois University. | Jitterbug Waltz | Ballad, Medium Jazz Waltz | mp3 file |
I was asked to arrange a tune for String Orchestra, Rhythm Section, and Trombone Soloist to premiere at a Northern Illinois University scholarship benefit concert, soloing on its debut there on April 1, 1989. I recall that the wonderful Huntley Brown, then a student, was the pianist; and I believe my colleague Carl Roskott was the conductor. This was a live, direct-to-two-track recording. Some years later I again performed the chart under my friend Stephen Alltop's direction for another benefit concert. | ||||
